In partnership with Utah Water Watch, and with a grant from the USU Extension, we recently launched a citizen science mobile app for iOS devices to allow volunteer scientists to track and record their observations on beaver dam building activity. If you'd like to help improve BRAT and help UDWR better manage beavers, take part in monitoring beaver using our new Beaver Monitoring App (developed by EcoTech Solutions in Partnership with Utah State University Extension)!

Joe Wheaton and Patrick Belmont (USU) joined a working group of researchers at the USGS's Powell Center in Fort Collins, CO to explore 'Exploiting high resolution topography data for advancing the understanding of mass and energy transfer across landscapes: Opportunities, challenges, and needs'. The group is led by Patrick Belmont and Paola Passalacqua, and will meet three times over the next year to work on a state of the science synthesis and potential edited volume. Thanks to the USGS Powell Center for their support of this important effort.

Joe will host a webinar on "Cheap and Cheerful Stream & Riparian Restoration - with Beaver?" on Jul 25, 2013 2:00 PM MDT. To register, visit:
This webinar is targeted at members of the National Riparian Service Team. The target audience is anyone interested in the conservation and restoration of riparian systems and the role that beaver can play in this management. The first hour of this webinar will include a presentation by Joe Wheaton from Utah State University on techniques and research surrounding partnering with beaver in restoration design. There will be a 30 minute question and answer session after the presentation. The meeting is being organized by Jeremy Christensen of Grand Canyon Trust.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
If you can't make the webinar, a recording of the meeting will be posted later at http://beaver.joewheaton.org.

An article by ET-AL members Joe Wheaton and Alan Kasprak and colleagues in the UK and Spain was just published online in the Journal of Geophyscial Research - Earth Surface. The article provides some of the first empirical field tests of classic braiding mechanisms. The article has been highlighted by AGU in their Journal Highlights and appeared in a 'Resesarch Spotlight' in EOS by Balcerak (2013) in June. See here for a press release from USU or here for a press release from coauthors at the University of Southampton.
